Born in Cleveland County, NC on April 2, 1932, she was one of the twin daughters of the late Orval Howard Davis and Essie Mae Rimer Hoyle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, John Franklin "Frank" Walters; a son, John Howard "Howie" Walters; three brothers, Howard Davis, Troy Davis, and Wyant Davis and sisters, Frances Gardner and her identical twin sister Corene Brackett.
Survivors include her daughter Lisa DeMarco (Rick) of Clover, SC, and two grandchildren Carissa DeMarco of Gastonia, NC, and Anthony DeMarco (Alexis) of Conway, SC, and great-grandchildren, John Brayden, Brooklyn, and Autumn DeMarco. In addition, there are multitudes of friends, nieces, and nephews whom she cared deeply for.
After graduating from Belwood High School in Cleveland County, Madeline and Corene went to Charlotte, NC sharing a room at a woman's boarding house off East Boulevard. The "twins" went on to attend Southeastern Beauty School, earning their stylist license, and began work at the LaMarick Salon inside the Belk Department Store in downtown Charlotte, as well as for Roland's Hair Salon. Madeline's career as a cosmetologist led her to own the salon "Madeline's Hair Fashion" in Mint Hill, NC, from which she eventually retired. Madeline met Frank Walters one evening when the gentlemen's boarding house tenants would join the lady tenants each evening around the common dinner table, which then was included in the rent of a room. Frank and Madeline were married on January 10, 1954, at Norman's Grove Baptist Church in Lawndale, NC. Their love for each other grew to become a family of four with the addition of Howie and Lisa. The family was guided and graced by God within the congregation of Oakhurst Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC. After Frank and Madeline retired, they moved from Mint Hill, NC to Clover, SC to be nearer to their beloved grandchildren. Their search for a new "home" church led them to Clover First Baptist Church.
Madeline treasured any time spent with her family and grandchildren, Anthony and Carissa. She also enjoyed planting flowers, and crafts such as sewing, cross-stitching, and crocheting. The pleasure from the crafts, word search puzzles, and life in general, sadly dissipated as the disease of Dementia slowly took over. The family is sincerely thankful to VIA Hospice for the dedicated and professional medical care given to Madeline this past year. She received excellent care as she transitioned to her final home, where she was Serenaded by Angels upon her arrival Monday, February 24, 2025. As a testament to the incredibly close bond between Madeline and Corene, the twins were born on April 2, 1932, and both died on February 24th, two years apart.
Madeline Walters' memorial service will be held on Friday, February 28th at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, and the Memorial Service, officiated by Rev. Nick Clanton, will begin at 11:00 AM with interment to follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
