Mardecia Greene Lee, 85, died peacefully at home on Saturday, June 5, 2021, with her family by her side. Born in Shelby, NC on September 5, 1935, she was the daughter of the late John L. Greene and Maudie McKee Greene.

Mardi attended Gardner Webb College and graduated with an education degree from Limestone College in 1956. She was an elementary grammar teacher.

She met Ed, the love of her life, on December 21, 1956. They went on their first date December 23rd, were engaged on February 9th, and married on April 20, 1957. They were rarely apart for their 63 years. Her entire life was centered around Ed and their family.

Mardi had a passion for reading. She always had a book by her side and typically read at least two books a week. She worked as a librarian to pay her way through college. Later in life she worked at the Mint Hill Public Library; surrounded by the other love of her life, books. Mardi was known by everyone for her exceptional intelligence. She was unbeatable in any game involving trivia. She would have likely set records had she ever been on Jeopardy. She was also known for her quick wit and clever quips. Sports were a big part of her life. She enjoyed watching football, golf, and basketball. She was an avid fan of UNC basketball. She was so passionate that Ed often had to leave the room during games.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Ed, and her infant daughter, Mary Alison Lee. Mardi is survived by her three daughters and son, Jenny Lee of Raleigh, Karen Lee of Pawleys Island, SC, Chris Lee (Carole) of Charlotte, and Susan Bledsoe (Mike) of Charlotte; six grandchildren, Ryan Lee (Brittany), Jordan Lee Reardon (Schuyler), Sean Billerman, Quinn Billerman, Matthew Bledsoe and Kaylee Bledsoe; two great-grandchildren, Addie Rose Reardon and Charlotte Lee; sisters, Jackie Weathers and Mary Greene; and brothers, John Greene and Tom Greene.

The family would like to offer a special note of gratitude to her caregiver, Benta Okoth, who became her very close friend as she stood by Mardi’s side every day for the past year. In addition, we would like to thank Susan Hino, owner of Annasus Compassionate Care, for her kindness and support.

The family will receive friends from 11:00-11:45 am on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at McEwen Funeral Services at Myers Park, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC, 28207. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 pm in the chapel. Interment will be at Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Shelby, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Novant Health Hospice, PO Box 33549, Charlotte, NC 28233-3549.

Mardi and her late husband Ed were two very important "grown ups" in the early years of our marriage, modeling what a successful relationship looks like. It would take a strong, smart, and confident woman to complement- yet not be overshadowed by- a man like Ed. Mardi was such a woman!

My wife Terry- to this day- recalls the hospitality and kindness that Mardi demonstrated to her (and us) some 40 or so years ago.

We are so sorry for your loss.

Sad to hear the news of Mardi's passing. Our prayers and deepest condolences go with the family at this time.
I so fondly remember the times I spent with Ed and Mardi having lunch at the Chic -Fil- a. What a warm and wonderful person I had the gift of meeting and spending time with. I will forever cherish these memories.
