Charlotte - Margaret (Peg) Lynne Masalonis Barwick, 73, passed away on April 8, 2021. She was born August 11, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Edward Walter and Patricia Baum Masalonis. The daughter of a career Army officer, she grew up in a number of countries including Germany and Taiwan before moving to Fayetteville, North Carolina. She graduated from Pine Forest High School in 1965, from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro with a B.A. in English in 1969, and married David, the love of her life, in August 1969. They were married for almost 49 years until David’s death in July of 2018.
Peg and David settled in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1975 where they made their home for over forty years. Peg was a devoted wife and mother while also serving her community in a number of volunteer positions, including with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and the Junior League of Charlotte. She also worked in a part-time position for Kings Business College.
An avid reader of fiction and the New Yorker, Peg was a wordsmith both in prose and in conversation. She was an observant nature lover with a reverence for all things flora and fauna, and was also profoundly creative, demonstrating her artistic ability in many beautiful forms of handwork. She loved traveling, cooking, entertaining, and appreciated good coffee and good wine. Above all, Peg was happiest in the company of those she loved, which were many from different walks of her life. Known as “Nana” to her beloved grandchildren, she was both their cheerleader and confidant. Ever optimistic and always kind, she lived her daily life with grace and gratitude.
Peg is survived by her daughter, Tracy Elizabeth Barwick, and her grandchildren, Mary Margaret and Davis Holt Robison. She is also survived by her sister, Kathleen Masalonis Kelly, and family of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date yet to be determined.
For those wishing to send memorial gifts, please consider the Nature Conservancy; Feeding America; Hospice; or the Levine Cancer Institute in Charlotte in honor of the excellent care she and David received there.
