The youngest of two children, Jo was born on January 5th, 1946 in Fairfield County, South Carolina to the late James Henry “Dee” Holmes and Sara Jones “Nana” Holmes.
Jo and her family relocated to North Carolina in the 1950s, living for a short time at a group home in Western Carolina, but otherwise she spent most of her life in the Charlotte and surrounding areas. In the early 1960s, she began working for Tyson Foods as a line worker, where she remained employed for about 10 years.
Jo was an avid reader, especially enjoying magazines, and was quite skilled at word searches. She also had a notable gift for writing creative short stories and poems. She could be given a topic and in just a few hours would present multiple pages of imaginative writing.
Jo was incredibly sociable, sweet, and friendly, and was always happy to spend time with the people she loved.
Those left to remember Jo include her beloved sister, Helen Holmes Carlton, whom she lovingly called “Sister”; her nephews, Howard Carlton and Phil Carlton (Cindy); her great-nephews, Kyle Carlton and Garrett Carlton; as well as many other loving extended family members and friends.
Jo has been reunited in Heaven with her parents, Dee and Nana; and her brother-in-law, Jim Carlton.
A graveside service to honor Jo will be held at 3:30pm on Friday, April 29th, 2022 at Forest Lawn West Cemetery, 4601 Freedom Drive in Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jo’s name to Autism Services of Mecklenburg County.
