She is survived by her many nieces and nephews and many grand-nieces and nephews in Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Peoria, Chicago, Milwaukee and Washington, DC. Nan was preceded in death by her husband Leon Sullivan (d. 2003), her brother Robert Gilmore (d. 2005), and her sister Betty Gilmore (d. 2014).
Following graduation from St. Teresa of Avila University in St. Louis, Nan taught elementary school for 15 years. She earned her Master of Social Work degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and practiced clinical social work in Peoria (Catholic Social Services) and counseled employees through Employee Assistance Programs in Charlotte.
While at Catholic Social Services, Nan met her husband Leon who was also a social worker. They wed in 1975 and set up residence in Charlotte, enjoying 30 years together. Both Nan and Leon were members of St. Gabriel’s Parish in Charlotte and were very active in social justice issues in the community-at-large. In her free time Nan loved to walk, visit with friends , play piano, read and travel.
The family extends warmest appreciation to Nan’s dear neighbors and friends, and to each of her wonderful care providers at ElderSource and CarePoint.
A Celebration of Life will be planned when safe to do so.
