Mrs. Porter, 87, of Charlotte, NC, passed away at Southminster under Hospice care, on January 3, 2026. She was born Marie Trenholm Caldwell on March 25, 1938, in Charlotte, to the late James Philo Caldwell and Marie Osborne Caldwell.
Marie was raised in Myers Park in Charlotte and attended Randolph Macon Woman’s College in Virginia. She was an active member of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of North Carolina and was a member of their scholarship review committee for a number of years.
Marie was married for nearly 40 years to Thomas Bradford Porter, who preceded her in death in 2011. Marie met Tom at the Charlotte Snow and Ski Club's trip to the Bahamas. Tom and Marie lived in the Stonehaven neighborhood of Charlotte and were active members of First Presbyterian (along with her parents), which is where they were married. For many years, Marie and Tom together enjoyed playing golf at the Charlotte Country Club, bird watching, and vacationing in the North Carolina mountains in Cashiers and along the coast of Georgia at Sea Island. In her later years of life, Marie stayed connected to the congregation of First Presbyterian through cherished visits from church members and watching the weekly broadcast of the Sunday service on television.
Marie is preceded in death by her younger brothers, James Philo Caldwell Jr and Joseph Elliott Caldwell. She is survived by her niece, Shannon Caldwell Leslie (husband Scott Leslie); several nephews, Joseph Caldwell, Jr; James Caldwell, IV (wife Catie Caldwell); and Elliott Caldwell; two great-nieces, Keira Marie Leslie and Currey James Caldwell; and her sister–in-law, Bernadette Caldwell.
Burial will be private. Memorials may be sent to the Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster (VIA Health Partners) at 8919 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210.
