Martin Wayne “Waynie” Hagler Jr., 80, passed away peacefully on December 5th, with his loyal pups, Ruby, Colt, and Opal, resting faithfully by his side. Born on August 12, 1945, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Wayne lived a full and meaningful life marked by service, hard work, and deep devotion to the people he loved.
Wayne grew up in Charlotte and graduated from West Mecklenburg High School in 1963 and obtained an associates degree in arts and applied science at CPCC. He went on to proudly serve his country as a United States Marine, completing a tour in Vietnam, an experience that shaped his strength, resilience, and enduring patriotism.
After returning home from Vietnam, Wayne began his professional journey with The A&P Tea Company in the National Produce Division, working as a buyer. During this time, he continued his education in real estate, which became a lifelong calling. He later joined Lawing’s Real Estate Inc. and owned J and W Realty, where he built a strong reputation both as a real estate agent, respected appraiser and auctioneer which he was still doing for the sheriff's office in Charlotte. Over the years, he worked with numerous banks and clients across the region, known for his sharp eye, steady hand, and unwavering integrity. In addition to his professional pursuits, Wayne became a dedicated Mason, proud of the brotherhood and service that membership provided.
Wayne had many passions throughout his life. He was an expert marksman who loved hunting and competitive shooting and was always committed to mastering his craft.
He and his beloved wife of 20 years, Ellen, made their home in Cornelius, where they were blessed with wonderful neighbors who became lifelong friends. In his later years, he found joy in the simplicity of farm life, raising hens so he could share fresh eggs with friends and spoiling his dogs who rarely left his side. After Ellen’s passing, Wayne moved to Monroe to live on his daughter’s farm, surrounded by family, open fields, his puppies and chickens, and the quiet comforts of country living.
Wayne is survived by his daughter, Heidi Medlin, and her husband, Bridger; his granddaughter, Madison; and his grandson, Miles, all of Monroe, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ellen; his parents, Martin Wayne “Sonny” Hagler Sr. and Virginia Lee “Ginny” Hagler; his brother, Randy Hagler; and his sister, Donna Reames.
Those who knew Wayne will remember him for his unwavering loyalty, his generous heart, his quick wit, and his sometimes cantankerous charm. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
A personal graveside service for friends and extended family honoring Wayne will be 2:00 PM, Sunday, December 21st, 2025 at Forest Lawn West Cemetery, 4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte.
