She attended Mineral Springs High School where she met John “Pete” Bass. They were married 62 wonderful years. She had a career in banking that spanned more than 50 years. Mary loved spending time hosting family events, especially Thanksgiving, church events and traveling to the beach with family. Faith in Jesus Christ was central to her daily living. She was often found in the church kitchen alongside her husband Pete, cooking meals and serving breakfast. Mary had an extreme fondness for backyard birds and loved listening to her many wind chimes while sitting on her back patio. Her backyard was a refuge where she could tend to her plants and develop her love of growing things.
She is survived by her three children: Angie Mitchell, Leigh Anne and Phillip Hammer, and Kevin and Jessica Bass; her three grandchildren: Johnathan and Evalina Mitchell, Katie Hammer, and Jennifer Hammer; and her three great-grandchildren: Mila Mitchell, Sophya Mitchell, and Oliver Mitchell; as well as her siblings, Jane Weddle Gregg and David Weddle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John “Pete” Bass; her parents, Lucille Weddle and Alexander “Eck” Weddle; and her siblings, Sarah Weddle Russell, Anne Weddle Sappenfield, and Jerry Weddle.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at 12:00 pm Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at Christ Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends before the service at 11:00 am at the same location.
