Mary Helms Fish

Mary Neal Helms Fish, 88, of Charlotte, died Thursday, December 2, 2010 at her home. Born in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Theodore Helms and Josephine Elizabeth Clanton Helms.

She was a graduate of Gastonia High School and Shelby School of Nursing. In 1981, she retired from Mecklenburg County Health Department after working 20 years as a registered nurse. Following her retirement, for the next 10 years, she volunteered as an RN for Hospice & Palliative Care of Charlotte. She was a faithful charter member of Mulberry Baptist Church in Charlotte.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Billie D. Fish; son, Dwight Thomas Fish, and wife Mary Taylor Fish; grandchildren, John Thomas Fish, Michael Joseph Fish and Susanna Elizabeth Fish all of Charlotte; brother Reginald Denny Helms of Louisville, KY; 2 nephews, 1 niece and a number of cousins.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Susan Fish in 1987; brother, Thomas R. Helms and sister, Gertrude Helms Burgin.

The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, December 5, 2010 at Mulberry Baptist Church with Reverend David Luther presiding. Interment will follow the service in Forest Lawn West Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church Sunday from 1:30 until 2:45 PM.
