Mary Elizabeth Fontana

Mary, 76, passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2021 in Charlotte. She was in the company of her loving family and in the devoted care of hospice.

Born June 8, 1945 in Elgin, IL, she was a daughter of the late Glenn and Ruth Giles. Following a career as a flight attendant, Mary spent the autumn and winter of her life working with multiple Christian organizations to help educate and provide opportunity for underprivileged children in the Charlotte area. Mary worked with A Better World Charlotte, and later, Brookstone Schools to help introduce theatre and speech programs to a generation of children.

The joy of Mary’s life was her family. She adored her husband, Danny Fontana, whom she married January 22, 1993.

She is survived by her sisters, Margaret Alice Walker and Martha Ryczek; two daughters, Lisa Ehele and Kim Skotzko; step-son, Casey Shannon, all of Charlotte; and five grandchildren, Alex Ehele, Noah Skotzko, Aiden Skotzko, Lillian Shannon, and Gabrielle Shannon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Danny Fontana; sister, Nancy Giles; and granddaughter, Lauren Ehele.

Mary was laid to rest with her late husband, Danny, at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Charlotte.

Mary was such a firecracker ! She had the best stories. Her life was so full. She loved telling about being raised with pigs and actually riding them when she was a child to being the hostess with the mostest when I met her. Mary loved her family and life. I will miss talking to her ❤️
