

Mary Jean Rusher Scappucci, 85, of Charlotte, died February 13 at Carolinas Medical Center.
Jean was born October 22, 1925 in Rutherfordton, NC and was raised at Thompson Orphanage in Charlotte as “Baby Jean.” She attended Warren Wilson College where she received her associate degree, and then earned a Bachelor of Religious Education at Presbyterian School of Christian Education. The wife of Domenico Scappucci, Jean worked as a secretary, for the Mecklenburg County Health Department, and as a caregiver. In her later life she was a resident of Parktowne Terrace. An avid reader and writer, Jean wrote poetry that she shared with others and published in local newsletters. She played an integral role at Mission of Hope and was an inspiration to many. Those who knew Jean admired her strong-willed spunkiness, her sense of humor, and her kindness to others.
Jean is survived by her brother, H.H. “Hub” Lyles, of Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dom Scappucci and her sister, Millicent Bryson.
There will be two services to celebrate the life of Jean Scappucci. A memorial service will be held at White Oak Manor at 4009 Craig Avenue in Charlotte on Thursday, February 24 at 2:30 p.m. Jean’s poetry will be read and friends will share memories of Jean. An additional service will be held at Mission of Hope at 11:00 on Sunday, February 27 at 4548 Old Pineville Road, Suite E. Jean’s dear friend, the Reverend Evelyn Pennington will officiate.
Family and friends of Jean Scappucci wish to thank the staff of White Oak Manor for their support and kindness during Jean’s three-year stay there.
