Mary Alice Thomas
February 22, 1931 – December 1, 2018
Charlotte - Mary Alice Thomas, 87, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2018. She was born in Charlotte to Nic and Duff Batty, and was married to Jere Thomas, who preceded her in death.
Mary Alice graduated from Central High School in Charlotte and UNC-G with a degree in home economics. Upon graduation, she worked in Gastonia for Duke Power, and 4-H in Johnston County as a home extension agent.
The story goes that friends from work arranged a dinner party and invited Jere as her blind date, but it was her baked Alaska that won him over. They were happily married for over 43 years. Mary Alice put Jere and herself back through school: his for an engineering degree and hers for a teaching degree.
An avid cook and gardener, Mary Alice loved to entertain with lots of vegetables and flowers from their garden. Together they shared a love of traveling, playing bridge, square dancing, and worshipping in Smithfield, NC. A true nurturer, Mary Alice was a school teacher for many years in Johnston County. She also taught Sunday school to both the young and old at The First Presbyterian Church of Smithfield. She was very active in her church and served many different roles there. Mary Alice held many offices in the Rose Manor Garden Club and volunteered with CONTACT, as well as the Food Bank. She will be missed by her many friends at The Carriage Club in Charlotte where she lived for over thirteen years.
She is survived by her two daughters, Sylvia Hutcherson, of Smith Mountain Lake, VA and Kathryn Frank, of Charlotte; three granddaughters, Katie Madding of San Francisco, Molly Shepherd of Raleigh, and Charlotte Frank of Charlotte.
A memorial service will be held in the auditorium at The Carriage Club on Tuesday, December 18, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends in the lounge immediately following the service.
On Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 1:00 pm, a service will be held at The First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield, NC. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.
