Born on September 22, 1923 in Berlin, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Ilse Jacobus and Hugo Hirschfeld. Mary was married to Tibor Robert Tompa for more than 50 years before his passing in 2001.
Mary enjoyed travelling for much of her life and lived in several countries before settling in the United States. She enjoyed watching golf and tennis tournaments on television and was an avid reader of biographies. Mary also enjoyed solving word search and crossword puzzles. She was also known to enjoy gardening.
She is survived by her daughter, Helen Holiman of Concord; her two grandsons, Gregg Holiman and his wife, Pam, of Concord; Todd Holiman and his wife, Lynn, of Huntersville; five great grandchildren, Matthew Holiman and Kelsey Holiman of Concord, William Holiman of Plainville, CT; Amanda Parenteau of Mukilteo, WA, and Rebecca Parenteau of Charlotte. Mary also is survived by several devoted relatives and many wonderful friends from around the world. She was the mother-in-law of the late Michael Holiman.
There will be no formal service, however relatives and friends are invited to call upon the family at 192 Northchase Drive, Concord on Saturday, June 25 from Noon until 3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association – Western Carolina Chapter would be appreciated by the family.
