
Mattie Mae Alderman Gray died on January 9, 2012 at Southminster. Born February 9, 1912 in East Hillsborough County, FL, she was the daughter of Mattie Dell Bryan and Harvey Alderman. She was a graduate of the University of Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of Myers Park Baptist Church, Winghaven Bird Sanctuary, the Mint Museum of Art, and a past member of the Salvation Army Auxiliary. She was also a life member of the Charlotte Garden Club.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Farnum Gray, Jr. and Dr. Darlyne Menscer; her daughters, the Reverend Madeline Gray of Chapel Hill, NC and Dianne Grimm; her grandchildren, Dan Gray of VA, Holly Morgan of Kansas City, MO, John Currie of Manhattan, KS, Kimberleigh Grimm of Seattle, WA, Lisa Washburn of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Lauren Uppington of Hillsborough, CA; and 12 great-grandchildren: Stephen, Chelsea, Jason and Charlie Gray, Dylan Morgan, Claire and Mattie Washburn, Jack, Virginia and Mary-Dell Currie, and Elizabeth and Lauchlin Uppington. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Farnum Moore Gray, Sr., her brothers and sisters, Gettis Alderman, Seth Alderman, William Alderman, Roy Alderman, Leon Alderman, Jesse Alderman, Leslie Alderman, Clara Alderman, Ray Hanks, Lena Adams, and Ruby Sweat.
A memorial service will be held at Myers Park Baptist Church, 1900 Queens Road, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2012. The family will receive friends in the narthex following the service. A reception will follow the service at Southminster Retirement Community, 8919 Park Road. A private service will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
