Dr. Melani Marion Moore, highly respected educator, passed away August 7th, 2020. She was born in Charlotte, NC, on July 17th, 1949, and lived in Charlotte for most her life.
Nationally Board Certified, Dr. Moore specialized in working with children with developmental disabilities. She taught special education at Amay James Pre-K Albemarle Elementary School, and retired from Lawrence Orr Elementary. Following graduation from Myers Park High School, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Russian, from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN. She held two master’s degrees: Master of Arts in Christian Education from The Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, VA, and Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. She was granted her Doctor of Philosophy in Early Childhood Education from Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Minnesota and a position atthe University of Louisville in Louisville, KY, Along the way, she taught Early Childhood Education in Taiwan for two years.
Dr. Moore was the daughter of Rev. Oren Moore, Jr and LaRue Allison Moore Cornish; granddaughter of Dr. Oren Moore and Louise Murphy Moore, and Henry Johnston Allison and Mary Kite Allison. She is survived her close friends Silvia Coleman, Elizabeth Edwards and Susan Coyne; by sisters Allison Moore and Rebeccah Moore Alexander; nieces Laurel Alexander and Stacey Alexander; nephews Arthur Alexander and Christopher Alexander; and grand-nieces Colette Jarmon and Karina Jarmon.
