Mercer Hyman Smith

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 28, 2014, at Mineral Springs United Methodist Church, Mineral Springs, NC with the interment to follow at 3:30 at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Smith was born in Scotland Neck, NC, Halifax County on December 8, 1912, the daughter of the late Jones Mercer Hyman and Mary Baxter Hyman. She graduated from Scotland Neck High School and Rocky Mount Sanatorium School of Nursing, Rocky Mount, NC class of 1935.

She was a member of Mineral Springs United Methodist Church, Mineral Springs, NC, Koinonia Sunday School Class and United Methodist Women. She was a former member of the NC Pharmaceutical Auxiliary.

She was retired from Charlotte Ear, Eye, Nose and Throat Hospital in 1980 after fifteen years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Ralph W. Smith, Jr. in 1993, and her eight siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Mathis and husband Ray of Union Co., NC; son, Ralph W. Smith, III and wife Pam of Waxhaw, NC; grandsons, Adam Mathis and wife Blaire of Indian Land, SC, Nathan Mathis of Charlotte; great grandchildren, Braden and Collin Mathis. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
