Michelle Hockett

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on October 16, 1947, Michelle attended the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music before joining “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in Washington, D.C.

As a featured solo oboist, she performed for four U.S. Presidents and shared her musical gifts through concert tours across the United States and Europe. After years of expressing emotion through the oboe, Michelle brought that same sensitivity and compassion to a second calling, returning to college after her retirement from the band to earn a degree in counseling and social work, with a special focus on women’s emotional wellness.

She also became a prolific painter, carrying the oboe’s lyrical voice into harmonies of color and light on canvas. Those who knew and loved Michelle will remember the range of her talent and the kindness and creative spirit she shared with everyone.

Michelle is survived by her daughter, Alexandra and Alexandra's husband Jon; sister-in-laws Sue Joiner and Mary Lou Hindley; brother-in-law Michael Winslow.

The sound, light, and generosity of her life will be remembered always.

There will be a private family remembrance at McEwen Funeral Home and final interment at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C.
