Nancy Basile Montagnino

Nancy Amelia Basile Montagnino, 95, of Statesville, NC, formerly Charlotte, NC, was called home to be with the Lord on August 29, 2026 with family by her side. Nancy was born on June 18, 1931in Carona (Queens), NY, to the late Pietro (Peter) and Sarah Basile.

Her life was a tapestry of rich experiences and loving relationships, woven with threads of resilience, compassion, and joy.

Nancys journey began in New York, growing up in Yorkville, the upper Eastside of Manhattan where she attended St. Monicas Catholic School. Though she left school at the tender age of 16 to assist her mother, her thirst for knowledge and ambition never waned. After marrying Joseph C. Montagnino, in September 1948 at St. Catherines of Sienna in NYC, they embarked on a shared adventure, living in various locations including Manhattan, Red Hook-Brooklyn, Jackson Heights-Queens, and Hicksville, Long Island. Together, they raised four children, eventually settling in Charlotte, NC, in 1959 where she birthed two more children.

Nancy achieved her GED from UNCC and pursued a career in nursing and a dream of helping others. Her work as a Volunteer Gray Lady at Mercy Hospital inspired her to become a nurse, a role she cherished deeply. After earning her LPN Nursing Certificate from CPCC, she dedicated 13 years to Beverly Manor Nursing Home before retiring from Mecklenburg County Health in 2006.

Nancy was a vibrant presence in her community, a member of the Elks Club, Bridge Club, and Charlotte Mecklenburg Senior Center. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, reflected in her involvement with the Church of the Beloved and Holy Comforter, where she lovingly made communion bread. An avid Bridge player and bowler, Nancy never missed her childrens baseball games and passionately supported Duke Basketball and Tennis. Her radiant personality and red hair made her the life of any gathering, whether organizing a luau or hosting tupperware parties.

Nancy was a devoted mother to her six children: Christine (JW) Martin, Joseph (Ann) Montagnino, John Montagnino, Scotti (Karen) Montagnino and Michael Montagnino. She was preceded in death by her son, Anthony (Ann) W. Montagnino of Boise, Idaho and 5 siblings, Sonny, Joe, Rosemarie, Dolores, and Joyce. Her legacy also lives on through her grandchildren, Steve Maddox (Kathy), Jeff Needham, Anthony Montagnino, Lauren Montagnino, Sarah Montagnino, and Keri Montagnino. As well as her great-grandchildren, Lexi Montagnino, Jasmyn Maddox, Hailey Maddox, Gracelyn Evans, Easton Little, Salem Hilles, and Wyatt Tayse.

A service to celebrate her life will be held on September 2, 2026, at 1:00 PM at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park, located at 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212.
