

Nancy Payne Sappenfield, 79, of Pineville passed away at home on May 25, 2011 after a 7 year battle with ovarian cancer. She was born to Warwick and Nancy Donnelly Payne in Dallas, TX on March 3, 1932. Raised in Charlotte, Nancy graduated from Central High School in 1950, attended Peace College for 2 years and graduated from Queens College with a degree in Bible and a minor in music. In 1954, she married her beloved husband, Dr. Luther C. Sappenfield. The couple spent most of their married life in Fayetteville, N.C. and were active members of Highland Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir for 43 years. She was also active in the Bell Choir, served as both Elder and Deacon and received an Honorary Life Membership from Presbyterian Women. She served as President of the Medical Auxiliary of Cumberland County. Nancy was an active community volunteer in the school system, enjoyed gardening and was a loyal friend and caregiver as well as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. After relocating to Pineville, she and her husband became members of First Presbyterian Church.
Nancy was blessed with a loving family and is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dr. Luther C. Sappenfield; sons and daughters-in-law, David and wife Marie, Daniel and wife Andrea and Michael and wife Leigh. Also is survived by her four grandchildren, Laura, Colin, Catie and Madeline.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 27 at 12:00 noon at 1st Presbyterian Church, 200 W. Trade St., Charlotte, NC.
