Matthews – Nell H. Thackston, age 99, passed away May 2, 2018, at Carillon Assisted Living Mint Hill. Nell was born August 7, 1918 in Greenville, SC and had lived her adult life in Charlotte, NC. She was a beautician for over 45 years. She had a heart for doing for others rather than herself. Her grandson, Eric, said she would give you anything she had and feed you every time you saw her. She loved her family. She was a wonderful cook, loved gardening, quilting and needlepoint. Nell raised her son, Howard, as a single parent, after the passing of her husband at age 37. She was a woman of strong character and constitution.
In addition to her parents, Nell was preceded by her husband, Howard Thackston, Sr., sisters, Althea Kennemore and Dorothy Dickson, nephews, Max Kennemore and Harris Dickson. She is survived by her son, Howard Thackston (Sharyn); her grandson, Eric Thackston (Kim); her great-grandchildren, Avery, Chandler, Bella, Ariel and Cory; nieces, Debbie Canupp (Charles), Dee Kennemore and Lynda Landrith and nephew, Ronnie (Susan) Dickson.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will take place on Sunday, May 6, at 3pm at McEwen Funeral Service’s Chapel located at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte.
