Patricia "Pat" Scantlebury

Born March 14, 1941, in Harrow, England, she went to high school with Reginald Dwight (better known as Elton John). Pat worked as an executive secretary in the City of London, and at Selfridges on Saturdays. She met her husband, Geoffrey, at a local Methodist church youth group. She enjoyed being in the cast of plays that performed for charities. They married in 1965, honeymooned in Prague and Paris, and then on to the U.S.A. on board the Queen Mary. They arrived in Charlotte on October 31, 1965. It was quite a shock compared to London; they had not seen toilet rolls on trees. Halloween is not a British holiday.

Pat, with her British friends, started a catering business. We are not sure whether her Christmas puddings were fully appreciated by the attendees at a function at Discovery Place, because the lighting of the brandy caught them by surprise. Selling food at The Buttercup led her to work there for over 25 years. She was known for her British wit, not necessarily appreciated by all, but she could giggle like a schoolgirl. She made many friends with the customers and through playing tennis at Sardis Swim and Racquet Club. Pat also enjoyed knitting and was known for her personalized knitted hats, knitting well over one hundred.

The joy of Pat’s life was her family - her husband Geoff, son Mark, daughter-in-law Lauren, and grandson Liam. She loved spending Thanksgiving at the beach with them. Videos of Liam and Facetime with him always brought smiles to her face. She could be heard chuckling as she replayed the videos over and over again.

Her friends will remember her kindness, consideration for others and making people feel welcome and at ease. Her passion was for things in life to be fair, even though we all wish that her hand would have been fairer.

We will celebrate her life from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Saturday August 1st at McEwen Funeral Service-Pineville, 10500 Park Road. In lieu of flowers, please consider the American Cancer Society.
