She was born April 23, 1930 in Charlotte, NC, to Pat and Willie Daniels Mungo. Her mother died when she was four-and-a-half years old but this opened the door to many surrogate mothers including her beloved grandmother, Elva Williams Daniels Webb (whom she lived with in her high school years). She also had the opportunity to become a part of the Walter & Mary Rozzelle family during her early school years while at Long Creek Elementary. She enjoyed remembering those years at the Catawba River. She attended their family reunions and was accepted as one of them. Other local schools attended were Dilworth Elementary and Alexander Graham Jr. High. She graduated from Central High School in 1948.
During her school years, her first job was at a local dime store. But most of her school years saw her working at the Dilworth Theatre, first as the “popcorn girl” and later in the box office as the cashier. She attended Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church almost all of her youth and maintained ties with them most of her life.
Her secretarial training landed her in various jobs including the Coast Guard in Norfolk, VA around 1950 and later, a fun, brief time at WIST back in the days of pop AM radio (1970s). But before that, just after graduation from Central, she went to work in the office of Universal Pictures then quickly moved to Wilby-Kincey Theatres, a local movie exhibitor in Charlotte. This was back in the days of “Film Row” along Church Street. It would be at Wilby-Kincey that she would meet the love of her life, Edward M. Marks. Things didn’t work out and they would go separate ways.
But when she and Eddie found each other again they knew they had something special. They married in November of 1955, in a friend’s red brick home on Sharon Amity that still stands. Their early years, the “best years” per her Eddie, were spent in Wilmington, NC. By 1962 they headed back to Charlotte to live out their lives, choosing a home in the Hickory Grove area. They joined Hickory Grove United Methodist Church which sustained and nourished them. She loved her church and the Epworth Sunday School Class and it is safe to say they loved her too.
In 1971 she became an employee of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system. She would work the longest as a secretary at the Metro School. She retired in 1989 from the Department of Public Instruction as an administrative assistant in Child Nutrition.
During the 1980s she went back to school and received her Associate's degree in Secretarial Science at CPCC, taking this further by sitting for the CPS exam (Certified Professional Secretary). She passed and soon became very involved in PSI (Professional Secretaries International now known as IAAP, International Association of Administrative Professionals). She made a number of friends within this organization.
Also beginning in the 1980s, she and her beloved Eddie began to travel more, often accompanied by her Uncle, the late J. Auddy Parker, who wished to complete a personal goal to step foot in every state of America (which he did with their help).
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Poland (Monroe, NC) and son and loving daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Sharon B. Marks. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Laura Kohn, two great-grandchildren and two special nieces, Kathy Luther and Marie Williams of Asheville, NC.
Patty was preceded in death by her grandson, Christopher Marks (2010) and her beloved husband, Eddie Marks (1998). She has been waiting a long time to join him in heaven and we have no doubt they are together again.
The family wishes to thank the love and care Patty received from those at Cuthbertson Memory Care Village at Givens-Aldersgate of Charlotte. Though we may not remember your names we remember your loving hands that guided her over these last several years. A special thank you to Cathy who loved “Patty Cake” very much.
Wilson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service to remember Patty will be at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, 6401 Hickory Grove Road, Charlotte, NC, 28205, on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at 12 noon with a receiving before the service beginning at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial donation to her church.
