Paul was born in Cooke, Texas on March 31, 1953 and lived his early years in Clearwater, Florida. Paul’s enjoyment for traveling the world was sparked when he spent his senior year of high school in the Philippines while his dad, a Baptist pastor, had the opportunity to be a chaplain at Clark Air Force Base. After returning to Florida, he attended Florida State and graduating with a BS degree.
Following graduation, Paul worked in Richmond, Virginia and Washington, DC before settling down in Charlotte for the last 33 years. Most of his years here, he worked at Myers Park Country Club.
When Paul was not working, he was studying up on flowers, gardening, and cooking. He enjoyed going to movies, gardens, museums, and spending hours with family and friends. If anyone asked him about these activities, he usually knew the answer to questions, but in case he did not, he was adept in asking the modern day know-it-all Google. Paul had a very easy-going spirit and never did you see him angry. He had the ability to always be ready for a good laugh.
Paul is survived by his brother Wayne Houston and his wife Clare. His niece Ashley Franklin, husband Matt and children Meg Scott, Aaron and Samuel. Nephew Christopher Houston, wife Jennifer and children Kayna and Coen, many cousins, who were like sisters, Mary Alice Vann, Beth Bivens and Cathy Evans. His many friends, but one of 32 years, Matt Ward.
Family is family but friends are made. Paul had the special gift of making friends and keeping them by being a reliable friend to them. This is a gift that increasingly few possess.
A service for the celebration of Paul’s life will be held at 11:00 am on February 24th at Living Hope at Ballantyne, 11724 Elm Lane, Charlotte, NC. We ask, in lieu of flowers, you give a memorial in Paul’s name to: Tunnel to Towers, PO Box 70819 Philadelphia, PA 19176-07
