She has been reunited in Heaven with her beloved husband of 56 years, Sidney Snipes; and her parents, O.D. Fisher and Annie Clee Fisher.
Peggy was born on February 22, 1933 in Nashville, NC. She grew up in Nash County NC and attended Red Oak High School, where she graduated with the class of 1951. That same year, Peggy and Sidney began dating after Peggy bribed his sister to set them up on a date. Instantly smitten, the two were married just a few months later, in September of 1951 in Nashville.
As newlyweds, Peggy and Sidney moved to Charlotte, where they welcomed their first daughter, Sandra, in 1952. Five years later they welcomed their second daughter, Lee.
Throughout her life, Peggy was consistently thoughtful, resourceful, and generous. She would regularly take her daughters with her to Mary Jo’s Cloth Store to buy fabric, and then she’d stay up all night sewing, so the girls could wake up to new outfits. She made all of her daughters’ clothes when they were growing up, and she even made their wedding dresses when they each got married. Peggy’s expert skill and attention to detail, the clothes she made often looked better and fit better than anything they could buy at a store.
Peggy also frequently opened her home to those she loved. She shared countless meals, but she also provided others with a safe place to stay, both short-term and, at times, long-term. By her very nature Peggy instilled generosity and selflessness in her daughters as well.
Friends and family all benefitted from Peggy’s excellent cooking and baking. Although everything she made was delicious, she was known for her sourdough bread, cinnamon rolls, seven-up pound cake, and pecan tarts. She also had a large vegetable garden in which she grew corn, beans, peas, cucumbers, and tomatoes, among many other things.
She was an incredible and dynamic woman. Peggy amazed family and friends with her natural athleticism in her adult and senior years. She played basketball for The Charletts through Mecklenburg County Senior Games, one year even winning the state championship and traveling with her team to Pittsburgh to represent NC in the national championship.
She was also a softball pitcher, and played for The Sassy Sisters through a local all-ages recreational league. Peggy always opted for her jersey number to match whatever her current age was at the time, and she continued playing for many years until she was 82 years old.
After a long and happy marriage, Sidney passed away in 2007, after which Peggy moved to Denver to live near her daughter, Sandra Watson and husband Jack. The last two years, Peggy lived in Greenville, SC to be close to her daughter, Lee.
While Peggy’s sweet soul will be missed terribly, there is comfort in knowing she’s at peace and at home with the Lord.
Those left to honor Peggy’s memory include her daughters, Sandra Watson and husband Jack, and daughter Lee Sowell and fiancé Bruce Pietkiewicz; grandchildren, Josh Watson and wife Jodi, Matthew Watson and wife Holly, Jana Joy and husband Todd, Jessica Campbell and husband Matt, Sidney Sowell and wife Sarah; great grandchildren, Lyla and Elyse Watson, Olivia Vaden, Wyatt and Sawyer Watson, Garrett and Dillon Joy, Kynlee, Noah, and Brooks Campbell, Tyler, Cora, and Grayson Sowell.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at Sunset Road Baptist Church, 2317 Sunset Road in Charlotte. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, at the church, with Rev. Steve Bass officiating. The burial will be private.
Memorial donations may be made in Peggy’s name to Kempton of Greenville (*Memory Care Unit*), 1560 Thornblade Blvd., Greer, SC 29650.
