

Phil was born in Salisbury on November 11, 1940 to the late Clyde McDaniel and Cordie Albright McDaniel Safrit. He lived in Charlotte from 12 years old until his death. He married Sandra Hill McDaniel on October 2, 1965 who preceded him in death. They had one son, William Scott McDaniel who is also deceased.
Phil attended Harry Harding High School in Charlotte and was nominated for Best Looking senior superlative. He was very popular and had many treasured friends, some of whom were lifelong. He was a regular at Town and Country Drive In and even had the car hops taking messages from girlfriends on the pay phone for him and his buddies. After high school, Phil joined the Navy and served two years active duty and two years inactive from 1959 – 1962 as a signalman. He was an avid golfer and a member in good standing at Eastwood Golf Course, Larkhaven Golf Course and Charlotte National Golf Course over the years.
Phil and Sandy were very active in the shag dance world and both were members of the Charlotte Area Shaggers Hall of Fame where their pictures and bios are displayed on the wall at Lynn’s Dance Club. They loved shagging and the lifestyle and attended SOS at Ocean Drive, SC as well as other dance events regularly until Sandy became ill. He was also nominated for Living Legends at Fat Harold’s in Ocean Drive, SC. Phil was one of the kindest guys you’d ever want to meet. He had a long illness with COPD pneumonia and AFib and even while in the hospital retained his great sense of humor and great smile. He always made you glad you came to see him.
Phil retired from Lollilard Tobacco Company as a marketing representative.
Left to cherish his memory is his sister-in-law, Carol Hill Church and brother-in-law, Johnny Church; nephew, Jerry Church and wife, Becky Church; niece, Leslie Church Hall and husband, Mark Hall; and grandnephews Sgt. John C. Hall and his wife, Carmen; Zachary Hall; and grandnieces Madeline Hall, Presley Church Stevens and her husband, Jim Stevens; Ava Church.
Visitation will take place on Monday, February 28, 2022 beginning at 1pm at McEwen Funeral Service, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212. A Memorial Service will follow at 2pm. Inurnment will take place at Sharon Memorial Park.
