I credit Rachel with helping me get my Favorite car. A 1967, light blue VW beetle. Used, but in pristine condition. It was the first year the beetle had a stronger, shorter engine cover in the rear. It also had a more powerful engine than previous VWs (1500 vs 1300 ccs). It was the first year Volkswagen went from a 6 volt to 12 volt battery. And it came with the factory, optional back-up lights! Even though it had just a tad over 50,000 miles, the engine had very recently been replaced.

The car belonged to Uncle Dufae Bridges. It was that uncomfortable time when Children have to tell their parent they are too old to drive safely. Uncle Dufae did not want to give it up, but was willing to sell it. I was in need of a dependable car and had the asking price.
Late teen, to my early twenties, that was the car that defined me.

Rachel was probably involved in their decision to sell the car, and might have even been at her parents house when I bought it. I had seen her at her parents house when they needed assistance in their declining health.

The last time I saw Rachel was at an extended family event. She made sure that she spoke to each and every cousin to remind us of Family. That is how I remember her from some other times we were together. Cousins are cousins, even if they are separated by years and distance.

Granddaddy Joe and Grandma Tillie (McSwain) Washburn had 11 surviving kids. When their kids had an average of 3-4 kids, we had a significant amount of 1st cousins among the grandkids. We had many family reunions over the years. I sorted the grandkids in 3 groups. I was in the Youngest group, who we could play with each other and become friends as kids. The middle group was just slightly older, but, from my perspective as a child had little in common with. The eldest group included Rachel. I saw them as similar to some of my aunts and uncles.

Yes, I remember her fondly as a Cousin. She made sure of it.
