

Randolph Kay McMillan, age 77, died Sunday, December 16, 2012, at Carolinas Medical Center. Born April 12, 1935, he was a native of Spartanburg, SC, the son of Jessie Kay and Leslie Love McMillan. He graduated from Spartanburg High School and Clemson University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Architecture and a Bachelor of Architecture. Following his service in the United States Army, he retired at the rank of Captain and moved to Charlotte to begin his career in architecture.
In 1966, he was a founding partner of Middleton McMillan, Architects, which grew into a nationally known and respected firm. Projects completed in Charlotte include the Public Library Downtown, Spirit Square, the Law Enforcement Center, Specialty Shops on the Park, as well as many additions and improvements to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and other colleges and universities. Middleton McMillan was also the architect-of-record for the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Mr. McMillan was named 1991 Architect of the Year by the Subcontractors Organization. He was well-respected for his knowledge and demeanor, and was one of the outstanding architects in Charlotte.
Upon his retirement in 2000, he spent more time golfing, gardening, woodworking and being Grandaddy, his favorite title. He could do many things with his hands and was always willing to share his knowledge and abilities.
Mr. McMillan was a member Emeritus of the American Institute of Architects and the Goodfellows Club, and formerly a member of the Myers Park Country Club, the Athletic Club and the Charlotte City Club.
Mr. McMillan is survived by his wife, Ethel Henderson McMillan; three daughters, Margery M. Lindh, Judith M. Robertson (Todd), and Lynda M. Folz (Don); four grandchildren, Brian Lindh, Kathryn Lindh Garcia (Gio), Andrew Lindh and Christopher Robertson. He is survived also by his brother, Leslie L. McMillan, Jr. (Betty) of Spartanburg, SC, and many cousins.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Harry & Bryant Funeral Home, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC. The funeral will be held Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at 11:00 AM in the sanctuary of Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1000 East Morehead Street, Charlotte, NC with interment to follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
