Raymond Edward McKinney, 89, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 24, 2025. Born on February 22, 1936, Ray lived a remarkable life marked by service, love, and an unwavering commitment to family and country.
Ray was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Donna, with whom he shared 18 wonderful years of marriage. He took immense pride in being a father to his children Deborah Shaffer (Ken) and Patrick McKinney (Mary). As a grandfather, he cherished time spent with his grandchildren Matthew Capua, Nicholas McKinney, Bryan McKinney, and Julie McKinney. Additionally, he welcomed the joy of being a stepfather to Jeffrey Radi, Christopher Radi (Jill), Eric Radi (Marilyn), John Radi, and Lynne Radi, embracing them as his own.
Ray is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Nocia; father, Floyd; brother, Buddy; sister, Betty Faye; and his previous wife Mercedes. Their memories live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Ray was a proud graduate of East Tennessee State University, where he laid the foundation for a life of service and commitment. His dedication to his country led him to serve in the United States Army for 26 years, including three tours in Vietnam. A true patriot, Ray loved his country deeply; his military service shaped his character and instilled in him values that he passed on to his family.
At Ray's request, no services are being held. Rather, friends and family are invited to raise a glass and toast "Sláinte" in his honor, a fitting tribute to a man who appreciated life and the bonds of community.
The family requests that any memorial tributes be made to the Charlotte Humane Society.
