Rebecca Bollinger Whitson McGowan, 74, of Charlotte, entered into rest on August 24, 2015 at Royal Park Nursing and Rehabilitation in Matthews. A native of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Fred A. Bollinger and Madgeline Howard Bollinger. She was a member of Morning Star Lutheran Church in Matthews. She was a graduate of Harding High School and attended Kings College in Charlotte. Prior to her retirement, she was a Clerk for the Mecklenburg County Register of Deeds, a Deputy Clerk for the Mecklenburg County Clerk of Superior Court, and a Records Clerk for the Charlotte Police Department. She was an avid Georgia Bulldogs fan and wanted everyone to share in her enthusiasm by exclaiming “Go Dawgs!” In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband, Gerald Whitson; by her second husband, Robert Leon McGowan; and by a brother, Robert Howard Bollinger.
Mrs. McGowan is survived by her children, Julie Whitson Wilson and husband Larry, of Stanfield, NC; Michael Whitson and wife Cathy, of Monroe, NC; and by Luke Whitson and wife Paige, of Charlotte, NC. Two brothers, Fred Bollinger and his wife Pat, of Roswell, GA, and Kelly Bollinger and his wife Mary of Snellville, GA, and a Sister-in-Law, Lib Bollinger of Matthews, also survive her. While she was the beloved “Nanny” to many people, she was the beloved grandmother to Charity and Dave; Mary and Travis; Abby; and Jade and Ava. Also surviving her are her eight great-grandchildren, David James, Domenick, Apollo, Kase, Peighton, Teddy, Oliver, and Thomas.
The family will receive friends at McEwen Funeral Service, located at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte, on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. A service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at Morning Star Lutheran Church, located at 12509 Idewild Road in Matthews on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at 10:00 AM. The Revs. John Mouritsen and Naomi Carriker will be officiating. Interment will follow in the Gardens of Sharon Memorial Park.
In lieu of customary arrangements, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region; 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, North Carolina 28204. Mrs. McGowan also strongly requested that you honor her memory by NOT voting for Hillary Clinton.
