Richard Andrew Bigger, Jr., 85, (better known as “Randy”, or Grandy to his grandchildren), went home to be with our Lord on Monday, May 23, 2022 at 12:55 am. He was the son of Richard Andrew Bigger, Sr. and Hazel Simpson Bigger, who predeceased him. He is survived by Margaret Goldsborough Bigger, his devoted wife of 60 years; his daughter, Joy B. Sanderson and husband Galen; and grandsons, Charles Allen Moore, Andrew Blake Christenbury, James Adam Christenbury, and Ryan Christenbury. He is also survived by his special girls, Carolyn S. Arey, husband Tim and son, JD, and Mary S. McDaniel.
Randy graduated from Myers Park High School, Princeton University, and the Law School of the University of Virginia. After two years of active duty in the Navy between college and law school, he practiced law in Charlotte for 50 years, specializing in estate planning and estate administration. He was certified by the North Carolina State Bar as a specialist in Estate Planning and Probate Law, a member of the Estate Planning and Fiduciary Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Assoc., and Chairman of that section in 1991-92. He was also a Fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.
Randy was a member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, elder, and Sunday school teacher. He also served on the Council of Mecklenburg Presbytery (Chairman, 1976-77). He was Moderator of Mecklenburg Presbytery in 1978. He was the Protestant Co-chairman of the Charlotte chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and later he served as a Board member of the Charlotte Council on Alcoholism. He also served as a Trustee of the Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary.
A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, May 26, 2022 in the chapel of McEwen Funeral Home-Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00-12:45 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donors may make a contribution to the Salvation Army or a charity of his or her choice.
