

Charlotte, N.C. - Richard Hoyle “Dick” Caudle, 92, died Sunday, October 13, 2013 at Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster in Charlotte after a brief battle with bladder cancer and renal failure.
He was born September 30, 1921 in Winston-Salem, NC, the youngest child of the late Charles F. Caudle and Daisy Snyder Caudle. He was predeceased by his older siblings, three brothers and three sisters.
Dick was a World War II veteran, serving overseas with the Army Air Corps and was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with One Bronze Star and One Silver Star. Following his military service, he graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1950 with a BS degree in Commerce. He then began a 35-year career with Hanes Dye and Finishing Company in Winston-Salem before retiring in 1985. Dick and his wife, Ethel, then moved to Cape Carteret, NC to enjoy many happy years of retirement together playing golf and participating in social activities with friends at Star Hill Country Club. In 2010 he gave up his beloved game of golf and weekly card games with his poker buddies to devote the rest of his time on earth to taking care of the true love of his life, Ethel, as she battled severe dementia. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and a true and dependable friend to many, giving far more than he ever received. He and Ethel were active members of Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church in Atlantic Beach, NC. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Ethel Safrit Caudle; son, Richard Caudle (Lee); daughter, Susan Hunt (Ken); and grandchildren, Matt Caudle, Sharon Caudle and Joe Hunt.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 16, 2013 at Augsburg Lutheran Church, 845 W. Fifth Street, Winston-Salem, NC with the Reverend Dr. Ronald Rinn officiating. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. A private family service of inurnment will be held at a later date at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church in Atlantic Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
