

Rita Mond of Charlotte, NC passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at her residence.
Rita was born in Chicago, IL to the late David and Georgia Rubin Chernoff. She was married to the late Irving Mond.
Rita graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. and secondary teachers degrees. She was a teaching fellow at the Washington State University where she earned her masters degree in parasitology. She worked for many years at various hospitals in Chicago, New York and Charlotte, including Chicago Lying-in Hospital, Sloan Kettering Memorial, Mt. Sinai Hospital, University Hospital of Bellevue and the former Mercy Hospital Charlotte. Rita was involved in break-through work in pathology and cytology and recognized for her work in cancer and rare diseases.
Rita was extremely active in the Jewish Community, including leadership roles on a local and regional level in B’nai B’rith Women, which began as a teen in the B’nai B’rith Girls (a tradition carried on by her daughter and granddaughters). She was a long time member of Temple Israel and served on the sisterhood board. She also maintained membership at Temple Beth El and served on the executive board. Her most recent honor for her years of dedicated service in the Charlotte Jewish Community was being designated “A Jewish Woman of Strength” – a unique, small group of women in Charlotte.
Rita co-founded the “Charlotte Jewish News” and served as its full-time editor for many years. She remained active with the paper in recent years as an advertising executive. Rita was a member of the U.S. and International Jewish Press Associations and received numerous awards for her writing, editing and involvement.
Rita is survived by her three children and their spouses, Darren (Staci) Mond, Jered (Elizabeth) Mond and Jodi (Gary) Michel, all of Charlotte, NC. She absolutely adored and cherished the time spent with and the accomplishments of all of her grandchildren, Allie Michel, Sara Mond, Mara Michel, Lauren Mond and David Mond. They were her blessing.
Funeral services will be held at Temple Israel in Charlotte on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at noon. Interment will follow in Hebrew Cemetery.
