Roy Freeman went home to the Lord and Rachel in the early evening of Aug. 18th.
Roy was a resident of the Steele Creek Community for his entire life. He attended Steele Creek Presbyterian Church as a life long member. He served two years south of the Equator and was a proud World War II veteran. Roy worked for over 44 years with the Lance Corporation. He mixed the first batch of Saltines in 1954. He ran the first push button batch of flour in 1962.
Roy was an active life time member of American Legion Post 221. He served as Post Commander for many of the past years. He attended and worked with Boys State for more than ten years. His love for the Legion was evident everywhere he went.
He is survived by one daughter, Ann, of Morganton, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilmer Price Freeman and Bessie Cathey Freeman. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Rachel Freeman. Roy's brothers Price, Henry, and Forrest, and sisters, Lillian and Louise, also preceded him in death.
Roy always quoted MacArthur, "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away."
His family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 21, 2012, from 2-3 p.m. at the Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, 7407 Steele Creek Road, Charlotte, NC, followed by his funeral service at 3 p.m. Reverend Dr. Jeff Pinkston and Reverend Valerie H. Phillips will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Steele Creek Presbyterian or the Steele Creek American Legion Post 221.
