

A funeral service will be held at McEwen Funeral Service on Wednesday August 21, 2024 at 11AM with burial to follow. Family will greet friends after all services are concluded.
Ruby was born in Belmont, N.C. (Gaston County). The tenth of twelve children, she was educated in Gaston County Schools and a few years following the high school graduation she began her professional career in Charlotte, N.C. Her career in the telecommunications sector spanned thirty nine years with Southern Bell and AT&T (1952-1991). This long time service showed her dedicated loyalty to her employer and yielded deep and long lasting friendships.
Fraternal, philanthropic, professional and volunteer organizations that she belonged to were: Order of the Easter Star, Order of The Amaranth, Daughters of the Nile, American Business Women’s Association, Carolina Heritage Chapter, where she was awarded 1973 ABWA Woman of the year award, and Telephone Pioneers of America.
Faith in Christ was central in Ruby’s life. She was a devoted and active member of Commonwealth United Methodist Church, Charlotte, N.C., for as long as she was able and through the years served on many committees. She loved her Church Family.
Ruby was predeceased by her parents and ten siblings. She is survived by her brother, Walter Jack Harwell, two nieces, Peggy Parker, and Jane Maliar, two nephews, N. Jack Broome and Lester Broome, six great nieces and nephews and their extended families.
The family would like to thank Brookdale Conway for their care of Ruby these last nine months and also acknowledge Brookdale Charlotte East Senior Living, her home for many years, where she cultivated numerous friendships with residents and staff.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Commonwealth United Methodist Church, 2434 Commonwealth Ave., Charlotte, N.C. 28025.
