Born November 8,1931 in Charlotte, NC, she was the daughter of the late E.T. Atkinson and Francis Crump Atkinson. After graduating from Pineville High School she served as the executive secretary to the CEO at Shaw Manufacturing in Charlotte and then as the executive secretary to the CEO of Package Products in Charlotte. When Package Products moved to south Charlotte she became manager of purchasing until her retirement in 1996. Her career at Package Products spanned 40 years.
Sara was a lifelong member of Stough Memorial Baptist Church in Pineville where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years.
The joy of Sara’s life was family and friends. She married Elmer Alexander Thomas January 19, 1950. She was an avid fan of the University of North Carolina basketball and the Atlanta Braves baseball. She spent many hours watching the games on television. Sara also loved reading, crossword puzzles, and bird watching.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Alexander Thomas in 2000. She is survived by her brother Tommy Johnson (Ann) of Oak Island, NC, a sister-in-law Thelma Crump of Pineville, a brother-in-law, Charles Russell Thomas (Suzanne) of Oak Island, NC, nephews Chuck Helms (Susan) of Rockwell, NC, Charles Russell Thomas, Jr, of Mooresville, NC and Nolan Alexander Thomas of Mooresville, NC. Nieces are Debbie Jones of Hampstead, NC, Cathy Starnes (Jim) of Albemarle, NC, Patti Crump Sledge (Don) of Charlotte, Cheryl Harrelson (Victor) of Concord, NC, Elizabeth Suzanne Thomas of Statesville, NC. and 12 great nieces and nephews. Special friends that were a huge part of her life are Molly and Robert Smith and family, Pam Crump and family, Johnny and Alyssa Hill and Harper, Justin Ashley, and Christy Carver and Jasper Jax.
