Born December 12, 1932 in Wagner, SC, she was a daughter of the late Reverend Broadie and Zoe Veir Pangle Jernigan. Mrs. Dennis, a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a BA degree in Elementary Education, taught in the public schools for several years. Afterward, she operated a daycare in her home with a long waiting list. Everyone wanted to get their child a spot with “Miss Sarah”. During her ten years in Texas, she was a member of Kingwood Baptist Church, where she taught 4-year-olds in Sunday school. She loved all children and was much-loved in return.
Mrs. Dennis was also an avid bridge player – and a good one, often bringing home prizes she’d won from one of her many bridge clubs. She was an active member of several garden clubs, as well as the Charlotte Retired Couples Club and the ExxonMobil Retirees Club. She was a member of the Charity League, where she served as vice president for some time, and worked with the director of the Sunshine Day Nursery, which was sponsored by the Charity League.
Mrs. Dennis is survived by Samuel F. Dennis, her husband of sixty years; two sons, Samuel F. Dennis, Jr. of Madison, WI and Bruce G. Dennis of Charlotte; and two daughters, Amy D. Goodson and Jody M. Dennis, both of Charlotte; as well as two sisters, Cordelia Huggins of Columbia, SC and Zoe J. Newton of Charleston, SC.
A service to celebrate Mrs. Dennis’ life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 22nd at Providence Baptist Church, 4921 Randolph Road, Charlotte, NC 28211. Her family will receive friends at the church following the service.
