She was born on Oct. 1, 1942, in Adairville, KY, to the late Maurice Halliburton Rogers, Sr., and Miriam Eleanor Hipple Rogers.
Sarah was a graduate of Olmstead High School (1960-KY) and Kentucky Wesleyan College (1964). She was an elementary school teacher for over 30 years in the Logan County (KY) School System (Adairville Elementary). Her love of children carried on after retirement as she moved from her home in Kentucky to South Carolina to help care for her grandchildren and lovingly influence their lives. They will misstheir “Nana” tremendously and will especially miss having her read to them. She loved to cross stitch and quilt and was an excellent cook. She was a University of Kentucky college basketball fan and a Chicago Cubs fan as well. Sarah was a strong spirited, sacrificing, hard working mother. She loved her children and grandchildren with all of her heart.
A lifelong Methodist, she most recently attended Harrison United Methodist Church in Pineville, NC.
Survivors include her son, Teddy Glenn Smith, Adairville, KY; her daughters, Benji Pauline Rust, Nashville, TN, and Sarah Corinne Walser (Harrison), Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren, Eleanor Rose Harrell, Rock Hill, SC (daughter of her deceased daughter, Mriam Rust Harrell, 1974-2011); Benjamin Clark Walser, and Harrison Clark Walser, both of Charlotte, NC; her brothers, Thaddeus “Sonny” E. Rogers (Carole), Adairville, KY, and Maurice “Buddy” H. Rogers, Jr. (Arlene), Hixson, TN; her sister, Ann Bates Rogers Clark (Wayne), Columbia, SC; and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Her family will greet friends on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, from 1:30pm-3:00pm at the Harrison United Methodist Church, 15008 Lancaster Highway, Pineville, NC, followed by her funeral service at 3:00pm. Reverend Tim Webster will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Sarah was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bobby Gene Smith (2007); her daughter, Miriam Frances Rust Harrell (2011); and her sister, Mary Eleanor Rogers Caine (2001).
