Selman was the oldest son of Isaac and Rhoda Litwin Welt; he was born in Connecticut, then raised in northern Virginia.
He attended the College of William and Mary, then medical school at the University of North Carolina, with residency at Washington University in St. Louis, and fellowship at Duke.
Dr. Welt practiced for 30 years doing high-risk obstetrics, and he delivered babies to over 7000 mothers during his career. He also taught med students and residents, most recently at ETSU Quillen School of Medicine, from where he is Professor Emeritus. His hobbies were gardening, reading history and philosophy, and finding new Asian restaurants.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Murray Welt.
Dr. Welt is survived by his wife, Deborah Hayter Welt; brother, Bernard Welt; two daughters, Ariel Welt and Carrie Welt; and grandson, Gabriel Welt.
