INDIAN LAND, SC – Sharon Jane Butler (nee Mattea), aged 83, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and servant of God, her life was a beautiful testament to her unwavering faith and her profound love for her family.
Born on February 26, 1943, in Collinsville, Illinois, ‘Shari’ was a graduate of Collinsville High School. While she did not seek accolades in academics or the business world, the impact of her life’s work is eternal, measured by the deep legacy she left within her family and across the global Church.
Shari’s greatest earthly priority was her immediate and extended family. Her deepest desire was ensuring that each of them knew Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, a truth she beautifully modeled daily through a life of grace, love, and devotion.
Her passion for her Maker and Savior extended far beyond her home. For many decades, Shari was a faithful servant in her local church, dedicating countless hours to volunteering and earning a reputation as a powerful prayer warrior. She was also a passionate advocate for global missions, traveling to numerous countries around the world being the hands and feet of Jesus. Shari and Ray founded Global Outreach in 1997, a non-profit faith based mission organization that assisted 100’s of orphans and trafficked children in China and India as well as many other worthy mission endeavors around the globe. Preferring to work quietly in the background, Sharon ensured everything ran smoothly so that the name of Jesus remained at the forefront. She was a small figure with a giant Kingdom impact—one that will not be fully realized until the faithful are reunited with her again in Glory.
Shari is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Ray Butler; her sister Janet Persons (Denny); her brother David Mattea (Suzy); her daughter Lisa Fowler (Glen); and her son Darron Butler (Kristine). She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren: Taylor Oldenburg (Kyle), Cortney Yungk (Robby), Nolan Butler, and Madison Saunders (Jaylon); as well as her precious great-grandchildren, Jacoby Oldenburg and Ivy Jane Yungk. She is also survived by many beloved nephews and nieces.
She was reunited in Glory with her parents, Reverend Louis and Rose Mattea; her step-mother Geneva Mattea; her brother, Ronald Mattea (Judy); her sister, Sandra Tinti (Roger); and her beloved grandson, Raymond Fowler.
A memorial and celebration service will be held at 2pm with fellowship and light refreshments to follow on Monday, June 15, 2026 at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church - 211 Marvin Rd, Indian Land, SC 29707
It was the ultimate thrill of Shari's life for people of all nations and tongues to come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through mission outreach. In lieu of flowers, Sharon and her family kindly request that memorial contributions be made in her remembrance to Bless Back Worldwide at blessbackworldwide.org
