Shirley Ann Carnes

June 16, 1934April 11, 2021

Shirley Carnes passed away peacefully on April 11, 2021 at the age of 86 after a multi-year struggle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, kidney disease, and dementia. She was born on June 16, 1934 in the city of Monroe, North Carolina and grew up in Waxhaw, NC. After graduating from Waxhaw High School, she lived the balance of her life in Charlotte, NC where she had a long successful career in banking that included 31 years with Wachovia Bank and Trust, followed a short period with Bank of Mecklenburg. In her retirement she pursued her passions of cooking, gardening, supporting her church, and taking care of her grandchildren and other family members. Shirley was an excellent cook, gifted gardener, talented homemaker, and enthusiastic host who frequently welcomed family and friends into her home for parties and dinners to celebrate birthdays, weddings, special occasions, and holidays. She was a loving, devoted mother and grand-mother who spent countless hours taking care of her children, grand-children, and others in her extended family who needed help. Known as “Mimi” by her grandchildren she showered them unconditional love and support throughout their lives. She was a generous and loving care giver who provided meaningful support and encouragement to her aunts, uncles, and in-laws as they encountered their own health care challenges. She was an active member of the Hickory Grove United Methodist Church for over 40 years where she belonged to Methodist Woman and the Epworth Sunday School class. She participated in numerous church committees and was a supporter of the Methodist Youth Fellowship program. Shirley will be sorely missed and survived by her husband O’neal Moser Carnes, her son Charles Carnes, daughter-in-law Ellen Carnes, sister- and brothers-in-law Maryjo Braswell, Kay Carnes, Russell Carnes, and her three grandchildren Keri Carnes, Rhett Carnes, and Morgan Carnes. Shirley was preceded in death by her son Rhett Marcus Carnes.

Shirley was one of the kindest, most generous and loving women I have ever known. She loved and was deeply devoted to her family. She was a loving grandmother and always there for anyone who needed her. I wish the world had more people in it like Shirley Carnes.

Shirley was always such a delight to visit with. My mother dearly loved her neighbors, including Shirley and Neal and I know that if she knew, she would be heart broken to learn that Shirley is no longer of this earth. My deepest sympathy to Charles and Neal and the rest of her family and friends.
