Shirley Hurley Rice, age 87, of Casar, NC passed away peacefully March 15, 2024, at Atrium Health Hospice & Palliative Care Cabarrus. Born June 18,1936 in Mecklenburg County, she was the daughter of the late Cicero Norfleet and Iva Louise Hurley. She lived life with a smile on her face. She cared deeply for her family and more animals than one can count. She loved the beach and the mountains and after the passing of her husband of 49 years, she often took to the road on a motorcycle to see the countryside. She never met a stranger and was always willing to help whenever she could. She retired from Cabarrus County School System after 24+ years of public service. She was a member of Rocky River Church in Concord, NC.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 23, 2024, at 10:00 am at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park Chapel, 5716 Monroe Rd, Charlotte, NC, 28212 with a committal service immediately following in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 9:00 am to 10:00 am. Jimmy Britt, Lead Pastor of Rocky River Church will officiate the service.
Mrs. Rice is survived by her four children, June R. Deese of Salisbury; David B. Rice (Debbie), of Sherrills Ford; Jeffrey L. Rice (Sheri), of Harrisburg; Daniel B. Rice of Kings Mountain; sister, Joyce H. Bare of Laurel Springs; 10 grandchildren, Gary (Betty), April (David), Courtney, Dale (Lindsey), Travis (Mandy), Jarrett (Autumn), Hunter, Kody (Shelby), Kory (Brandon), and Brian; 12 great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Brooklyn, Jackson, Emma, Annabelle, Scarlett, Parker, Analise, Gunnar, Quinn, Maddox, and Parker; and one great-great grandchild, Zachery. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Bland Rice; two sisters, Frances High and Dottie Crews; son-in-law, Carl Deese, and granddaughter, Monica Deese.
