

She was a long-time Charlotte resident. Shirley was born in Stanly County, NC and graduated as valedictorian from Badin High School, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Women’s College of North Carolina (UNCG) and earned a master’s degree from University of North Carolina - Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, David Schwartz; parents, P.V. Epps and Cora Bell Whitley Epps Lisk; stepfather, Horatio Lisk; brothers, P.V Epps Jr and Bobby Epps; as well as sisters, Betty Epps Higgins and Karen Epps Winfree. Shirley is survived by 3 sons: Michael (Lorie), Benjamin and Daniel; 3 grandchildren: Jackson, Rebecca Alise and Jacob; a stepbrother: Bobby Lisk; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was a career educator and retired from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System in 2000. She taught French at Eastway Junior High School and English as a Second Language at Sedgefield and Sterling Elementary Schools. Early in her teaching career, she taught in Forsyth County as well. Prior to her health decline, she served as a beloved Sunday School teacher for the senior adult class. Shirley had many intellectual hobbies and was an avid writer of poetry as well as short stories.
A service will be held at the McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Rd., Charlotte, NC 28210 on Tuesday, 18 November 2025 at 10:30 AM. Burial will be private at Forest Lawn East Cemetery.
Flowers are welcomed, as are donations made in her memory to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina; Homes for our Troops, Aleph Institute; or any other charitable organization of choice.
