CHARLOTTE - Mr. Konopka, 77, passed away on Friday, October 9, 2015. He was born on May 17, 1938, in Coverdale, PA, a son of the late Felix and Edith Styles Konopka.
He is survived by his loving wife and eternal best friend, Kathleen "Kate" Konopka; his brothers, Ron, Ray and Ed "Archie". His children include sons, Stan Jr. (Carol) and John (Arlene); daughters, Rhonda (Steve) Gerber, Bobbi (late Michael) Biehl, Jamie (Pete) Sturtevant and Traci (Ken) Zorak.
As a young man, Stan mastered the skills of masonry and glass block. He worked for many years for Mellon Stuart Construction Company in Pittsburgh, PA, helping in the construction of hospitals, various Pittsburgh buildings and the Iron City Brewery. He then ventured west to California and created a successful masonry business of his own, passing his skills down to his sons. After all of his hard work took a toll on his body, he and his wife moved to Charlotte, where he was able to enjoy his time fishing, cooking and baking. He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and loved playing fantasy football. He was also loved by his grandchildren: Jason Gerber, Jessica Taylor, Breanna (Michael) Magnoli, the late Michael Biehl, Landon Biehl, Lacey (Corey) Briggs, Miranda Konopka, Thara Moyers, Bridgette Sturtevant, Trevor Konopka, Jackson Konopka, Kenneth (Lauren) Zorak, Sarah (Joseph) Fulmer, Emily (Weston) Zorak and Zackary Zorak; also five great-grandchildren.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 pm on Monday, October 12, 2015, in the Harry & Bryant Chapel, 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends following the service.
