Surrounded by her loving family, Susan Schooley Poole peacefully passed away in the early morning of July 14, 2025, at The Charlotte Assisted Living in Pineville, North Carolina. Born on November 19, 1946, in Mount Airy, NC, she was the daughter of the late Alene Combs Weatherman and Curtis B. Schooley of Galax, VA. Tragically, Susan lost her father at a young age when he was killed in action during the Korean War. Several years later, her mother married the late Thomas S. Weatherman, who became a devoted stepfather and loving grandfather to Susan and his grandchildren.
Susan married Paul R. Poole while he was a Cadet at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Together, they embarked on a journey through military life while starting their family. Paul's military career took them to various army bases, but they eventually made Charlotte, NC, their home, where they have lived for many cherished years while raising their three children.
Those who knew Susan recognized her tenacity in every task, whether good or challenging. A passionate sports enthusiast, she enjoyed running and biking, and she excelled in tennis and golf. Additionally, she was an avid gardener, finding joy in flowers, planting, and nurturing her yard. Susan had a passion for music and it wasn’t unusual to find her dancing around the room as she tended to her daily chores. Her sense of style was unmatchable, always trendy and beautiful even in the simplest of fashion. Above all, her family was her pride and joy, providing her with endless happiness.
Susan is survived by her husband, Paul R. Poole of Charlotte; one son, Paul R. Poole, Jr. (Elyse) of Chappaqua, NY; two daughters, Stephanie Poole Barker (John) of Lancaster, SC, and Kellie Poole Chesson (Brant) of Raleigh, NC. She leaves behind seven grandchildren: Zander Poole, Chloe Poole, Caden Poole, Hannah Jones, Logan Jones (Kristi and little Arwyn her treasured great-grandson) Grayson Chesson, and Griffin Chesson. She is also survived by her two sisters, Debbie Weatherman Cure (Allen) and Patty Weatherman Jones (Walter) and her adored nephew, Will Greene, and beloved nieces, Shannon Cure and Dillon Cure. Susan enjoyed various endearing names by her family which included Oosie, Susie, and Uncle Susan, all of which always put a smile on her face. Her absence leaves a great void to her family which will take time to heal.
The family will receive friends and family for a Celebration of Life on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 1pm at McEwen Funeral Service - Pineville Chapel located at 10500 Park Road in Charlotte.
At this time, the family would like to thank the staff at The Charlotte Assisted Living for their assistance in caring for Susan. A special thank you to Susan’s daughter, Stephanie. Her unwavering and tireless dedication and love for her mother will always be remembered, leaving a legacy of compassion that will inspire those who know and love her.
The family requests that you please consider making contributions to the Parkinson’s Foundation for the ongoing research of this debilitating disease.
May you rest in peace dearest Susan in the place that has been prepared for you by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
