Sue was born December 15, 1932 in Alton, IL, and grew up in Waycross, GA. She was the daughter of the late Tom and Aline Murphy. Sue graduated from Waycross High School in 1949 and attended Emory University. She moved to New York to live and work for Dan River Mills, Inc. It was there she met her husband, Wally. They married in 1960 and moved to Charlotte where they spent the rest of their lives happily together.
Sue was a longtime member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church, and it was there she taught the five-year-old weekday school class for many years. She also served as a Girl Scout leader, and volunteered at the Mint Museum and A.S.I.D. Designer House.
Following her retirement, she and Wally enjoyed traveling. Sue was an ACC basketball lover, as well as an avid Carolina Panthers’ fan, and was thrilled with Charlotte’s growth. She would be so happy with the return of the Charlotte Hornets!
Sue was a lovely lady inside and out, always warm and welcoming, and the eternal optimist. She had a smile that could light up any room. She was incredibly talented and artistic and appreciated the beauty in God’s world. She dearly loved spending time with her family, especially her three grandchildren who gave her overwhelming joy and made her so very proud.
Sue loved to cook and was always excited to try new recipes. Her most requested dish was “Grandmama’s Spaghetti”, which she was always happy to prepare. Sue was a wonderful wife, mother, sister and grandmother and will truly by missed by all who knew her.
Sue was preceded in death by Wally, her husband of 52 years. Left to honor and cherish her memory are her daughter, Sally Taylor (Brock), her three grandchildren, Murphy, Jake and Riley; her brother, Henry Hill Murphy III (Jane); her nephew, Thomas Patrick Murphy; and her niece, Katherine Shirley and family.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 15th at Myers Park Presbyterian Church. Her family will receive friends at the church following the service.
Memorials may be made to Special Olympics North Carolina, 2200 Gateway Centre Blvd., Suite 201, Morrisville, NC 27560-9122, or to Presbyterian Hospice, P.O. Box 33549, Charlotte, NC 28233.
