Born June 21, 1940 in Monroe North Carolina she was the daughter of the late William Thomas McCain and Clara Mae Starnes. After graduation from Prospect High School in Monroe Sylvia attended six months of business school. She married Emmett C. Gulledge and had daughter Tonya. After a short marriage she divorced Emmett and remarried James Devereux in 1975.
Sylvia Worked at Life of Virginia for 16 years while Jim was a dentist. She later divorced Jim in 1985. She bought a new house in south Charlotte and got a job at Boyles Furniture as a receptionist.
