Terry was born on May 14, 1969, in Akron, Ohio, and grew up nearby in Stow. He was a graduate of Holy Family Catholic School, Stow High School, and Kent State University where he found his passion studying primates in the Venezuelan rainforest with Dr. Marilyn Norconk. He began pursuing a graduate degree in biological anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis and spent his summers running a field station and collecting data on his favorite primate, saki monkeys, in the Amazon. These were his happiest and most formative memories. More recently, he used his skills in computer programming to work as a database architect in the financial services industry. He was a voracious reader, excelled at mountain biking, and cared deeply about social justice.
By far his most cherished role was husband to his wife Sheela (Athreya) and father to Ariana and Roma. He loved spending time watching documentaries on family movie nights, playing games, traveling, playing guitar or listening to music, and just being together. During the last two and half years of his illness, he would often say that as long as his family was by his side, things were good. He leaves behind an incredible legacy of love and a shining example of putting family first.
In addition to Sheela, Ariana, and Roma, those left to cherish his memory include his mother Judy (Walter), sisters Ann Majors (Andy) and Kelly Crum (Mike), brother John Gleason (Christa), father-in-law Balu Athreya, nieces, nephews and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his beloved father John Gleason in 2019.
Funeral arrangements are private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Terry’s memory to Vecina, an organization committed to empowering immigrant justice, at https://vecina.org/.
