Thomas Edward “Ed” Powers, a devoted father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on April 3, 1937, in Marion, South Carolina, Ed was a steadfast example of love, character, and strength to everyone who knew him.
Ed was the beloved son of the late Wyman Drew Powers and Lillian Carolyn Crowder Powers. Growing up in Marion, he formed the values and work ethic that would define his life. During his high school years, he worked alongside his father, driving trucks and making deliveries, an experience that sparked a lifelong love of machinery and traveling.
After graduating from Marion High School, Ed enlisted in the United States Navy in 1955, serving honorably as an E-5 and earning a Good Conduct Medal in July 1959. Following his military service, he attended Clemson University and continued his passion for driving by operating 18-wheelers for Overnight Transportation to support himself through school. His sharp mind and mechanical aptitude naturally led him to a successful 35-year career at Celanese, where his engineering insights and problem-solving abilities became highly valued.
A man of deep and steady faith, Ed was a devoted member of Starmount Church. His gentle spirit, sincerity, and warm sense of humor brought comfort and joy to many. He loved working in his yard, repairing anything mechanical, and spending time outdoors — especially camping, which he enjoyed with family and friends. He loved U.S. history—particularly World War I and II—and enjoyed watching old westerns and football games. He could often be found sitting in his chair solving Sudoku puzzles. Ed was a trusted advisor, known for his unbiased advice and his willingness to always help others.
He was also fondly remembered for his unique Chick-fil-A order, lovingly called “The Mr. Ed”—a #1 with the meat grilled, never fried, because he liked to “taste his chicken.” The team at his local Chick-fil-A adored him. They often recognized him as he was walking inside and would begin preparing his order the moment they saw him. Many times, they surprised him with an extra sandwich or free food simply because they cared for him and enjoyed his presence so much.
Ed’s greatest joy in life was his family. He was married to the love of his life, Jean Brown Powers, for 64 wonderful years. Together, they raised three daughters: Terry Powers Wilder (Sam), Cathy Powers Francis (Karl), and Joy Renea Powers. He was a devoted grandfather to Adam, Brandon (Keeley), Shelbie (Zach), Wesley (Shauna), Amanda (Thomas), and Michael, and a cherished great-grandfather to Rosalie, Wyatt, and Atlas. His stories, laughter, and kindness will be remembered forever.
Predeceased by his loving wife, Jean, and his parents, Ed is survived by his daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his sister, Barbara P. Dover. His absence will leave a deep and lasting void in the lives of those who loved him.
Receiving of friends will begin at 1pm on December 8, 2025, at Starmount Church, located at 1501 Starbrook Drive in Charlotte, North Carolina. A funeral service celebrating Ed’s memorable life will follow at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to World Witness, the foreign missions agency of the ARP Church, or to Starmount Church.
