Tonya Hemphill-Suber, affectionately known as “Nana” and “Aunt Mommy,” was born March 20, 1969, in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was the third daughter to Ruth Ann Hemphill and the late Tommy Lee Hemphill. Tonya grew up in Charlotte and graduated from South Mecklenburg High School. Tonya was a proud employee of Atrium Health (formerly Carolinas Medical Center), with a tenure of over 35 years with the hospital.
Tonya’s greatest joy was being a grandmother to her four special grandchildren, Craig (“Duke”), Cameron, Carly, and Carson. She spent her time showering her babies with anything they desired. Tonya was also everyone’s favorite auntie and called “Aunt Mommy” by all of those she cared for. She attended Ebenezer Baptist Church in Charlotte, and loved her church family.
Tonya was a staple in the Charlotte community and was known for her charm, kindness, and smile. She was nurturing, supportive, and loyal. Every election season, Tonya was a dedicated poll worker and she was an avid bowler. Tonya loved to sing and enjoyed all things music, but perhaps her favorite past time was binge watching every television show. She also enjoyed hosting game nights with her family and friends, and celebrating her annual 29th Birthday. Tonya was glamorous and beautiful inside and out.
Tonya departed this world on July 13, 2024. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Howard William Suber Jr. (“Bill”), and her beloved father Tommy Lee.
Tonya is survived by her three children, Kiesha Hill, Latrice Hemphill, and Howard William Suber III (“Trey”); her mother, Ruth Ann Hemphill; three sisters, Sandra Berry (Bill), Melissa Etheridge (Donald), and Angela Davis (James); and one brother, Dewan Massey, all of Charlotte, NC.
Tonya will be greatly missed by a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, additional relatives, and close friends. Thankfully, her memory is everlasting.
A visitation for Tonya will be held Saturday, July 20, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 2020 W. Sugar Creek Rd, Charlotte, NC 28262.
