Walter was born on September 22, 1930, in Cooleemee, North Carolina, to the late Walter Julian Miller, Sr. and Adelaide Vogler Miller. He attended Cooleemee High School and graduated with the Class of 1949.
It was during those years that Walter met the love of his life, Mable Milholen Miller. They married on October 14, 1950, beginning a remarkable love story that would span more than seven decades. Together, Walter and Mable built a beautiful life and a loving family. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on October 14, 2025. Their enduring love and devotion to one another was an inspiration to their family and to all who knew them.
In 1952, Walter enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He attained the rank of Sergeant and was an Expert Marksman. His service as a Marine was a source of tremendous pride throughout his life, and he carried the values of dedication, loyalty, honor, and service with him always.
Walter spent nearly 40 years with National Cash Register (NCR), where he served as District Service Manager for Charlotte and the surrounding territory. Following his retirement, he enjoyed 33 wonderful years doing the things he loved and spending time with his family.
Walter was happiest working with his hands. He loved his tools and could often be found fixing something, tinkering with a project, or simply figuring out how things worked. He enjoyed music, history and animal programs, cheering on the Carolina Panthers, and watching golf.
Walter was a remarkable, kind-hearted, sweet, dedicated, loyal, and generous man who was deeply loved by his family. To those closest to him, he could do just about anything, lovingly earning him the nickname “Superman.” Above all, Walter was a man of deep Christian faith. He was a very devoted member of Sharon United Methodist Church of nearly 40 years and most recently, Matthews United Methodist Church, where they truly believe they found their new Church home.
Walter will be remembered most for his extraordinary devotion to Mable, the love he had for his children and grandchildren, his pride in his country, his service as a United States Marine, and his unwavering faith in the Lord.
Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 75 years, Mable M. Miller; son, Thomas Mark Miller, Sr. and wife, Paige; daughter, Ashley Miller Capreol and husband, Bob; grandson, Hunter Chase Capreol; as well as his sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
Along with his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and Jim Jordan; his son, Walter Timothy Miller; and his grandson, Thomas Mark Miller, Jr.
Walter leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, loyalty, and devotion that will live on through the family he treasured so deeply.
